Balcony Solar in Europe: Rules, Storage and Power Stations

Plug-in balcony solar explained: Germany's 800 W and 2,000 Wp rules, registration, grid-tied vs off-grid use, storing solar energy and staying safe.

6 min read Updated Balcony solar

Plug-in solar systems, often called balcony power plants, have become popular across Europe. One or a few solar modules on a balcony railing, a terrace or a garden shed produce electricity that is used directly in the home. This guide explains how these systems work, what the current rules in Germany say, and how a portable power station can store solar energy for the evening or for off-grid use.

Important: the rules for plug-in solar differ from country to country and change over time. The information below describes the situation in Germany as of October 2026. Always follow the rules that currently apply in your country, and check with your grid operator, landlord or owners' association where required.

How a balcony solar system works

A typical balcony system consists of:

  • one to four solar modules, mounted on a railing, wall, flat roof or in the garden;
  • a microinverter, which converts the modules' direct current into 230 V alternating current;
  • a connection to the home's electrical circuit, either via a normal household socket or a special energy socket.

The electricity flows into your home's circuit and is used first by whatever is running at that moment: the fridge, the router, a washing machine. You buy correspondingly less from the grid. Surplus electricity that is not used at that moment flows into the public grid, usually without payment.

The rules in Germany (as of October 2026)

Germany simplified the rules for plug-in solar devices with the "Solarpaket I", which came into force in May 2024, and with a dedicated product standard that followed in December 2025. The main points:

  • Inverter output up to 800 W. The inverter may feed in a maximum of 800 VA (commonly called 800 W).
  • Module capacity up to 2,000 Wp. The total peak power of the solar modules may be up to 2,000 watts peak. Larger module capacity than inverter output is allowed, so the system produces more in the morning, evening and in poor weather.
  • Registration in the Marktstammdatenregister only. Plug-in solar devices must be registered in the Federal Network Agency's market master data register (Marktstammdatenregister). The registration has been simplified to a few data fields, and a separate notification to the grid operator is no longer required.
  • Product standard DIN VDE V 0126-95. Since 1 December 2025, this standard sets safety requirements for plug-in solar devices. According to the standard, systems with up to 960 Wp of module capacity may be connected via a normal household (Schuko) socket, provided the inverter has the required certified protection. Systems from 961 to 2,000 Wp need a special energy socket, such as a Wieland socket, installed by an electrician.
  • Tenants and flat owners. Plug-in solar devices are now a privileged measure in German tenancy and condominium law: landlords and owners' associations can generally no longer refuse them without good reason, but they may set conditions, for example on mounting and appearance. Ask before you install.

Other countries have their own limits, registration duties and connection requirements, and some apply different inverter limits or require notification to the grid operator. Check the current national rules before buying.

Grid-tied and off-grid: two different setups

It helps to distinguish two ways of using solar modules with batteries.

Off-grid: a power station as a solar battery

The simplest way to store solar energy is to connect folding or rigid solar modules directly to a portable power station's solar input. The station stores the energy, and you plug devices into it as needed: in the evening, in the garden shed, or during a power cut. Because nothing is connected to the home's wiring, this is not a grid-tied system. Check that the modules match the station's solar input voltage range and maximum wattage.

A station with 1–2 kWh of capacity and a solar input of several hundred watts is a common choice for this use. On a clear summer day in central Europe, 400 Wp of modules typically deliver around 1.2–2 kWh, depending on orientation, tilt and shading; on cloudy days, much less.

Grid-tied with storage

Some manufacturers offer battery systems designed specifically for balcony solar, which sit between the modules and a certified microinverter, or inverters with a battery input. They store midday surplus and feed it into the home circuit in the evening, while respecting the 800 W limit. Germany's grid connection rule VDE-AR-N 4105, in its 2026 edition, also addresses plug-in battery storage. Only connect storage products to your home circuit that are certified for this purpose, and follow the manufacturer's installation instructions.

Never plug the AC output of a regular portable power station into a wall socket. Portable power stations are not designed to feed into the home circuit. Doing so is dangerous and not permitted.

How much can a balcony system produce?

The yield depends on orientation, tilt, shading and location. A module mounted vertically on a railing produces noticeably less than one tilted towards the south. As a rough orientation, a well-placed 800 Wp system in Germany typically produces several hundred kilowatt-hours per year, often in the range of 500–800 kWh. The share you use yourself depends on when you consume electricity. Storage increases that share by moving midday surplus into the evening.

Choosing modules and a power station

  • Modules: rigid glass modules are durable and suit permanent mounting. Folding portable panels are lighter and suit flexible use with a power station, but they are generally not intended for permanent outdoor mounting on a railing. Check the manufacturer's intended use.
  • Power station capacity: for storing a day's surplus from a small system, 1–2 kWh is a common range. Use our AI Solution tool with the Balcony solar preset to size it for your devices.
  • Solar input: the station's maximum solar input in watts and its input voltage range must match your modules. Series connection raises the voltage; parallel connection raises the current.

Safety

  • Mounting: modules must be fixed securely against wind. Wind loads on a balcony railing can be considerable. Follow the mounting instructions and, if in doubt, ask a specialist.
  • Electrical connection: do not use multi-socket adapters or extension reels for grid-tied systems. Have an electrician check the circuit if you are unsure about its condition.
  • Modules produce voltage whenever light falls on them. Cover them or work in the dark when connecting cables, and use undamaged, weather-resistant connectors.
  • Power stations outdoors: most are not waterproof. Place the station in a dry, shaded, ventilated place, and remember that most lithium batteries do not charge below about 0 °C.
  • Fire safety: keep batteries away from flammable materials and do not cover the ventilation openings.

Summary

Balcony solar is a simple way to use your own solar electricity. In Germany, systems with up to 800 W inverter output and up to 2,000 Wp of modules benefit from simplified rules, with registration only in the Marktstammdatenregister and specific connection requirements depending on module capacity. A portable power station adds flexibility: it stores solar energy for the evening, the garden or a power cut, without being connected to the home's wiring. Always check the rules that currently apply in your country before you install.
